European History: A Common Goal!

I couldn't believe what I saw with my very own eyes, that France and Germany have already established what generations of cynics have claimed impossible: a common treatise on the history of Europe taught in both countries, written by French and German experts equally and printed in both languages!

As other blogs have already stated, many people outside Europe cannot understand the elation we feel; just take a moment, though, and think of centuries of nationalistic boundaries, founded so deeply that education was yet another instrument of their imposition - all crumbling to dust, as German Education Minister, Annette Schavan, pushes for the establishment of a common history textbook across the EU. And while evidently some problems still exist in establishing a common position in all matters, I cannot help feeling thrilled!

It is a happy day - a glorious day!
